Innerfence and AppNinjas are about to make a giant leap into hardware devices and physical processing environment.
According to the practical ecommerce, both applications will support, within 60 days, a “hardware device” that will enable merchants to swipe cards instead of keying in transactions (no hint regarding the card reader type that will be used).
Derek further implies that such swipe transactions will be considered as Card Present (“running cards at a Swipe’s rate”) and will also enable merchants to enjoy “both online and in-person transactions” using the same one solution/merchant account.
Getting a Card Present approval from Visa and MasterCard isn’t easy. Verifone decided to disable the CNP scenario on their PAYware Mobile solution when they applied for a CP acknowledgment… Assuming such is achieved, it is still far from the vision of one solution for both scenarios: Card Present and CNP.
As both Innerfence and AppNinjas are using Authorize.net as a Payment Gateway, they cannot offer an ‘all in one’ account unless same is offered by Authorize.net. Other major Gateways and Processors are in the very same place and currently do not support such one account, so “hold your horses” on that vision for the time being…

What about the politics of the money? Where does it lead to?
How much money is made by the associations and the banks on CNP transactions? How much additional risk should indeed be attributed to these transactions? Is there really someone who can make them switch on CP transactions on mobile devicess?

Philip – thanks for your multiple questions. CCPrUs annotations:
Does money have politics? WWIII? Associations – not much. Banks – more. Some additional risk no doubt which does result with somewhat higher rates. Yes, with the right device and flow.

Have they gone into any detail about the risks of identity theft that this poses?
I’m still pretty skeptical of these apps, you don’t know who’s found a way to get in there or who is on the other end of the transaction.
Chuck,
Adding a hardware device and moving from CNP to CP transactions reduces the processing risk.
These iPhone apps function as any other Virtual Terminal through which credit cards are processed.
The risk is identical – the shopper provides his personal CC info to a person that keys-in the transaction. Same applies in any MOTO (Mail Order/Telephone Order) transaction, regardless of application.
The PERSON receiving the info is where the risk resides – not the VT/iPhone app…
Right, the desire to enable both online and in-person transactions is common yet only few are good at both ends.
We, at NationalACH don’t have such presumptions. We know what we’re good at and stay focused providing what we know best!
Will Innerfence and AppNinjas hardward devices accept gas credit cards like Shell, Chevron and/or Texaco?
Well, it depends…
A Chevron branded Visa card (for example) will be accepted at any business accepting Visa cards using the Innerfence/AppNinjas solution.
Other closed loop cards (like Shall) will only be accepted at Shall gas stations. If a shall gas station will implement the Innerfence/AppNinjas device, such a station will be able to accept a Shall credit card using the Innerfence/AppNinjas technology.
